What is diabetes?

Diabetes mellitus is a serious, chronic disorder that may not have obvious signs, symptoms or warning signals. The diagnosis can be delayed until routine lab tests indicate a problem or when the disorder has progressed. Other medical conditions, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and kidney failure may complicate adult diabetes. Diabetes is caused by either a decrease in insulin production or a decrease in the action of insulin on blood sugar. Treatment must be carefully chosen in order to make corrections in the blood glucose (sugar) level.

Why do I need to attend diabetes education classes?

You may have heard about the complications that result from elevated blood glucose levels. Poor control of diabetes affects the entire body. Specific areas that are commonly affected by diabetes include:

  • Eyes
  • Heart
  • Stomach
  • Kidneys
  • Nerves
  • Feet
  • Circulation

Information that you learn in class can help to prevent further damage from diabetes to these body systems and provide you with valuable information about living with diabetes.

Who can attend the classes?

Any person with diabetes may attend the classes. At no additional charge, a spouse, supportive family member or friend may also accompany you. Class size is kept small so that you receive individual attention, yet gain information and support from other group members. You may enroll yourself in the class, or your physician may suggest these classes for you.

What will I learn from the classes?

Diabetes education classes provide you with information about how you can live well with diabetes, not just live with diabetes.

Group education classes provide information about diabetes care, and how blood glucose testing, meal planning, and daily activities can increase your sense of well-being and improve your health. A group setting provides you with a variety of experiences from other members, but allows individualized attention for your special needs. Instructors for the class are specialists in diabetic care and have years of practical experience to share with you.

When and where are classes offered?

Class sessions are held two days from 8:30 am to 5 pm on selected days of the week. You will need to attend both days to complete the course. Classes meet at the Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology, on the fourth floor of Wichita Clinic Murdock, 3311 E. Murdock.

Medicare and most insurance companies in Kansas cover the cost of diabetes education classes. Managed care insurance plans require a physician referral. Contact the customer service representative from your insurance carrier to determine your benefits.

The course includes:

  • Individual assessment
  • Two full days of education
  • Blood glucose testing
  • Blood meter training
  • Snacks & written materials

Charges for the course are billed through Wichita Clinic.

To register for the classes, call (316) 689-9989.

Are there other options for diabetes education?
